Roush Performance always has a huge footprint at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, and this year was no different in that regard. Notable though was the presence of a number of prototype vehicles that raised some eyebrows.
These are vehicles which have been teased at various other shows like SEMA and online with the company’s social media. They have high horsepower, flashy features and design touches, and they aren’t available yet through a Roush dealer.
The first one to catch our eye was the Roush F-150 pickup truck which at first blush looked rather close to the package they currently offer. It has the Roush front grille, lower bumper insert and chin splitter that looks kinda nice.
Upon closer inspection was a 650 horsepower graphic on its front fenders that begged for some explanation. Under the hood is all you need to know, a 5.0 liter V8 with a Roush supercharger system on top. A cold-air-intake is there, check. The TVS2300 supercharger, check.
The Roush Phase 2 supercharger system here is already on the market, so its no big secret. But this is a completed F-150 that would amount to a Stage 3 package complete with lowered suspension if they chose to build them.
Next up is the OD Green Roush RST Mustang prototype. Based on their base-grade RS with a 310 horsepower 2.3 liter EcoBoost, they have bumped it up to an astounding 511 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque.
This comes by way of a huge turbocharger upgrade, a cold-air intake, and a healthy new tune for its ECU’s circuits. This is a prototype package that could end up in the Roush catalog in kit form or even a completed car like the RST prototype.
The car as it sits has a full coil-over suspension with some slick 20-inch Vossen wheels. There is also a Roush Quad-Tip active exhaust system which must have an interesting sound when revving hard. This car was so secret, they wouldn’t show us its engine.
The blue and white Roush Track-Pak Mustang prototype has been making the rounds of the show circuit for a couple years now, first appearing at the 2014 SEMA Show with then a claimed 777 horsepower.
Under the hood now is something even more wicked which we weren’t allowed to see, a Roush supercharged 5.0 Aluminator crate motor and a wicked tune good for 850 horsepower and 795 pound-feet of axle twisting torque.
Today it’s had a makeover with some stunning red chrome 20-inch Vossen wheels to go along with the huge G-Stream carbon fiber wing, and a full Track-Pak coil over suspension among other things. All they need to do is build it. Build it.
When it comes to following through on prototypes for production, Roush has a 50/50 track record. They’re an engineering company, a skunk works always coming up with wild new things. But they are also a business, and Jack Roush always expects a business case be made for anything they sell.
